PEX Tubing insulation

PEX tubing should be insulated to reduce the amount of heat loss throughout the tubing. Insulating PEX is the same as insulating around copper or steel pipe. The easiest and cheapest method is to use pipe insulation called self-seal foam pipe which is a rubber insulation material available in many diameters for varyingly-sized PEX tubing. Installing this insulation is incredibly easy and the insulation is relatively inexpensive. You can find this type of foam pipe insulation at your local Lowe’s, or Home Depot, or some other home improvement store.

Installation

  • Insert the PEX tubing into the formed foam pipe insulation. Depending on the size of the insulation you need, you may want to cut the insulation into several pieces with a pair of scissors or a utility knife.
  • Remove the plastic adhesive on both sides of the insulation foam at the same time. Make sure that each length of insulation is fully adhered to assure that your insulation will perform to its full potential.
  • Use insulating tape to tape the end seams in between each length of foam insulation used to reduce heat loss through these spaces.
