PEX Tubing and Ultraviolet Light

PEX Tubing and Ultraviolet Light
PEX tubing is not intended for use outdoors. The tubing must be in a concealed environment to assure that it isn’t exposed to direct sunlight. However, different manufacturers produce PEX with varying resistances to ultraviolet light. For example, Nibco’s Dura-PEX contains UV stabilizers that protect it from short-term exposure to damaging sunlight. Still, normal PEX should not be exposed to ultraviolet light for a period longer than 30 to 60 days. PEX with UV stabilizers and protection shouldn’t be exposed to the light for more than six months.
Ultraviolet light causes PEX tubing’s molecular structure to break down and oxidize which causes the pipe to become weak and eventually rupture. Regular PEX tubing only has resistance to ultraviolet light to protect it while being used on the job site. If installed outside, PEX must be sheathed in a protective sleeve. Always check with the manufacture to find out just how long your PEX tubing can sustain ultraviolet light without disabling damage.
